Providers
United
Providing
Quality daycare and Creating Economic Opportunity in the Northwest Bronx
Overview
Providers United is a network of over 30 family daycare providers working
in the Northwest Bronx. Based on community input concerning the
shortage of regular childcare in their neighborhoods, family daycare
providers began organizing and building a network to improve and expand
the supply of childcare in the Northwest Bronx. Today the network
provides technical assistance to providers, makes recommendations to their
programs, provide training and evaluation, observes children with
providers and helps foster the professional development of each provider
member.
What is Family Daycare?
Family daycare is the ongoing care of more than two children in a
caregiver's home for more than three hours a day. Family daycare is
distinct from babysitting in that the caregiver's are licensed through the
Department of Health to provide quality care for children. Quality
care means: nurturing caregivers providing a safe, healthy, stable
environment. Our providers are knowledgeable concerning children's
development and only accept small numbers of children to ensure that each
child receives individual attention. Many studies have demonstrated
an association between childcare quality and children's development - the
better the quality of care in these formative years, the better children
fare. The characteristics that equip children to be successful
in school are formed early in life. Providers United family daycare
program offers children educational curriculums which focus on reading and
math readiness. The aim of the program is to foster in children the
characteristics necessary to become successful learners before they enter
school. These characteristics include confidence, curiosity, self
control and the capacity to communicate and be cooperative.
