Fordham Bedford
Children’s Services has two After-school Programs that serve children in
the Fordham- Bedford section of the Bronx.
The programs are known as the New
Walton and Refuge House Programs.
Both programs serve children in grades 3-6.
Refuge House After-school Program Our Refuge
House program is located at 2715 Bainbridge Avenue Bronx, NY 10458.
This program serves 35 children and is open Monday –Thursday
2:30-5:30. Program
Schedule 2:30-3:10
Snack Children arrive
and eat nutritious snacks provided by the program. During this time, the children can socialize with their peers
and staff members. Board
games are available for the children during this time. 3:10-4:30
Homework The children
are then divided into 3 homework groups according to grade. Two tutors are
responsible for working with each group.
Volunteers from Manhattan College, Fordham University and local
high schools work with the staff
4:30-5:30
Activity Period This time is allocated for the children to participate in a range of activities. Activities can range from newsletter writing, computers, After-school Program club meetings, chess, and art projects. Every Thursday is Gym day. (Use of a gym provided by Our Lady of Refuge School). Projects
& Partners In
addition to the After-school Program throughout the week, our programs are
structured so that the children can also participate in weekend
activities. All
Stars Reading Club S-Team
Each session is structured around a particular topic. Topics
include: Goal Reaching, Non-Material Assets, Diversity , Imagination and Personal
Effectiveness. Each topic is
explored through public speaking, art projects, one-on-one conversations
and journal writing. Children
are able to further learn from these workshops through guidance and
attention of trained volunteers that work one-on-one with them during each
session. S-Team workshops are free and include lunch. Upcoming

February – Celebrating Black History Month: The youth and the parents are going to participate in hands on activities that will explore the many facets of the Black Experience.
