Fordham Bedford Children’s Services has two After-school Programs that serve children in the Fordham- Bedford section of the Bronx.  The programs are known as the New Walton and Refuge House Programs. Both programs serve children in grades 3-6.

The goal of the After-school Programs is to provide a positive, safe and fun environment where children can learn and grow.  The children’s skills and knowledge are further developed through the program curriculum.  The children participate in activities such as newsletter writing, computers, arts & crafts, club meetings, and recreation periods.

Refuge House After-school Program

Our Refuge House program is located at 2715 Bainbridge Avenue Bronx, NY 10458.  This program serves 35 children and is open Monday –Thursday 2:30-5:30.

Program Schedule

2:30-3:10  Snack

Children arrive and eat nutritious snacks provided by the program.  During this time, the children can socialize with their peers and staff members.  Board games are available for the children during this time.

3:10-4:30 Homework

The children are then divided into 3 homework groups according to grade. Two tutors are responsible for working with each group.  Volunteers from Manhattan College, Fordham University and local high schools work with the staff

4:30-5:30 Activity Period

This time is allocated for the children to participate in a range of activities.  Activities can range from newsletter writing, computers, After-school Program club meetings,  chess, and art projects.  Every Thursday is Gym day. (Use of a gym  provided by Our Lady of Refuge School).

Projects & Partners

In addition to the After-school Program throughout the week, our programs are structured so that the children can also participate in weekend activities.

All Stars Reading Club
A new literacy program coordinated in conjunction with New York Cares.  This program is held once a month on Saturday from 10:00-12:30 at our Refuge House After-school Program.  Children have an opportunity to read individually and in groups as well as participate in literacy activities.

 S-Team
A program offered at our Refuge House After-school program that is designed to build self-esteem.  This program gives children a safe environment to explore who they are, what they are good at, what they can accomplish and most importantly, the power to act from this knowledge.

Each session is structured around a particular topic.  Topics include:  Goal Reaching,  Non-Material Assets, Diversity , Imagination and Personal Effectiveness.  Each topic is explored through public speaking, art projects, one-on-one conversations and journal writing.  Children are able to further learn from these workshops through guidance and attention of trained volunteers that work one-on-one with them during each session.  S-Team workshops are free and include lunch.

Upcoming Events

February – Celebrating Black History Month:  The youth and the parents are going to participate in hands on activities that will explore the many facets of the Black Experience.
