Fordham Bedford Children’s Services has two After-school Programs that serve children in the Fordham- Bedford section of the Bronx.  The programs are known as the New Walton and Refuge House Programs. Both programs serve children in grades 3-6.

The goal of the After-school Programs is to provide a positive, safe and fun environment where children can learn and grow.  The children’s skills and knowledge are further developed through the program curriculum.  The children participate in activities such as newsletter writing, computers, arts & crafts, club meetings, and recreation periods.

New Walton After-school Program

Our New Walton After-school Program is located at 2270 Walton Avenue Bronx, NY 10455.  This programs serves approximately 20 children and is open Monday- Thursday from 3-6 p.m.

Program Schedule

3:00 -3:25 Snack time
Children arrive and eat snacks that are provided by the program. During this time, the children can socialize with their peers and staff members.  Board games are available to entertain the children during this time.

3:30-5:00 Homework  Period
All of the children are divided into specific homework groups.  There are 5 children per homework group with one staff member is assigned to each group.  Volunteers from Fordham University and Fordham Preparatory High School also work with the tutors to provide more individualized attention to those children that require additional help.

5:00-6:00  Activity Period
This time is allocated for the children to participate in a range of activities.  Activities can range from newsletter writing, computers, After-school Program club meetings,  chess, and art projects.  Every Thursday is considered free play when the children can choose to play different board games, draw, paint or use the pool table.

Projects & Partners

In addition to the After-school Program throughout the week, our programs are structured so that the children can also participate in weekend activities.

Knowledge Universe :
The After- School Program at New Walton is very unique in that is offers the youth of the 2270 community a chance to reach for the sky.  Knowledge Universe is a multi-purpose academic store that serves grades 3-6th.  This concept was developed to give the youth positive incentives that illustrate how they should be appreciated and awarded for their educational achievements.

New York Cares Recreation Project:
Once a month children at our New Walton After-school Program have an opportunity to attend recreational and educational field trips throughout New York City. Trips have included: rock climbing, ice skating, museums, Great Adventures, Rye Playland and many more fun places.

Read to Me:
A literacy program coordinated in conjunction with New York Cares.  Read to Me is held once a month at our New Walton After-school Program.  Volunteers accompany the children to library where they participate in small group and individual reading. Read to Me is held once a month on Saturday from 10:00-2:30 p.m.

Upcoming Events

February – Celebrating Black History Month:  The youth and the parents are going to participate in hands on activities that will explore the many facets of the Black Experience.
